Hello everyone ! I am Celia, lover of culture, good food and quirky holidays. On my Central Vietnam trip, I was lucky to spend 6 days in Hue Da Nang Hoi An – a retreat brimming with moments of enchantment and surprises. Between Hue’s imperial pagodas, Da Nang’s serene beaches and Hoi An’s lantern splendor — each destination on this itinerary comes with its own mood and appeal. With Autour Asia, a professional local travel company, this journey was seamless and sweet. Here are my route, tips and what I’d recommend you see for the best trip to the heart of Central Vietnam.
A brief trip from Hanoi and I land in Hue – Phu Bai Airport which lies 15 kilometres away from the heart of the city. A driver is waiting for me at the exit and I make my way to Hue Riverside Villa, a 3-star hotel in Hue situated on the bank of the Perfume River. From the very first minutes, I’m charmed by the tranquility that reigns over the city, far from the hustle and bustle of the capital.

My adventure begins with the Imperial Citadel of Hue, a diamond of the Nguyen dynasty. Just ten minutes away from the center, it was for more than a century in the early 19th century the political and spiritual heart of Vietnam. When I go through the Noon Gate (Ngọ Môn), with its towering walls, I’m taken back in time. The golden pavilions and lotus ponds featuring dragons carved in the Palace of Supreme Peace tell the past magnificence of emperors — a quintessential stop on my 6-day itinerary Hue Da Nang Hoi An. Even partly restored, the citadel exudes a somber and calm beauty. I walk along its sunlit trails and allow the magic of Hue to take hold.

In the mid-afternoon, I head to Thien Mu Pagoda, one of the symbols of Hue. On a hill alongside the Perfume River, it captivates with tranquility and charm. Its seven-story octagonal tower, Phuoc Duyen, stands proudly among bonsai and frangipani trees. The sound of the bells merges with the wind, warming our hearts — the perfect setting for the days of my 6 days in Hue Da Nang Hoi An, where the spirit and the land combine. I wander through the gardens, skirt saffron-robed monks and then I stop on the terrace to drink in the golden river view — a day’s end steeped in quiet and calm.

Today I start my tour with a visit to the imperial tombs of Hue about ten kilometers away from the city center. I begin at the Tomb of Tu Duc, poetic and tranquil, surrounded by lakes and pine trees. Then comes Minh Mang and Thieu Tri with its symmetrical gardens and confucian air. Finally, I come across the more recent Tomb of Khai Dinh, which fuses oriental and European styles beneath a skin of twinkling mosaics. These triumphs of architecture recall the regal opulence and spiritual grace of Hue – must-see sights on any 6-day trip to Hue Da Nang Hoi An, a place where art and history collide in timeless harmony.

After the imperial tombs, I head back into the city to Dong Ba Market, oldest and busiest market in Hue. I eat a bowl of bun bo hue for lunch at the counter of a tiny street food stall and then wander amid the stalls selling spices, fruits, silks and multihued lanterns. The mood is exuberant, laced with laughter and chatter – indeed this entire 6 days in Hue Da Nang Hoi An is filled with Vietnamese culture but especially generous. To take away, I purchase a conical poem hat, a discreet present and symbol of the elegance of Hue.

Just before sunset, after walking to the wharf, I board a dragon boat for a ride on the Perfume River, an interlude of calm as the golden reflections on the water surface waft to the sounds of traditional musicians. I light one lantern and set it adrift on the river – every flame is a wish for peace. There are hundreds of those floating lights all around me, the whole thing is definitely magical. The night ends with a performance of ca Hue, traditional music with soft, soothing tones — a moment of grace that is both poetic and calming.

2-day itinerary in Hue

Day 3 takes me from Hue by car to Da Nang, some hundred kilometers to the south. Just over an hour into the trip I break at Lang Co, a tiny seaside resort town nestled between the ocean and the mountains. The beach is amazing and there is white sand and palm trees that are bent by the wind as far as you can see. Having a coffee with a sea view, I see fishermen and small colorful boats nestled gently in the lagoon - one of the 6 days in Hue Da Nang Hoi An must-stop. A gentle little breather before pressing on the road to the Hai Van Pass.

Leaving Lang Co, the lane ascends towards the Hai Van Pass, renowned as the most breathtaking panorama in Vietnam. In some 40 minutes, as curves follow curves, at each curve more spectacular views of the sea and mountains surround you — this is a highlight of this 6-day itinerary in Central Vietnam. I pause for a moment at the top at Hai Van Pass, an ancient passage from imperial times shrouded in mist. The air is clean, the wind is blustery and the feeling of freedom is complete.

I make my way to Da Nang and am there in less than an hour. The city lies along the sea with a long white sand beach. Booked into a hotel a short distance from My Khe, I spend a happy afternoon immersed in the warm sea, lulled by the roar of waves on one of the most attractive beaches in Da Nang. The salty water, fine sand and sunshine are perfect reasons to relax. Later, I read on the beach while watching the sky turn golden. At dusk, I enjoy a seafood dinner facing the sea — a peaceful and radiant moment, where the gentle charm of Hue seems to give way to the modern energy of Da Nang.
Accommodation: Stella Maris Beach Danang Hotel (day 3 and day 4)
After a lively night in Da Nang, I start the fifth with a trip to Ba Na Hills, some forty kilometres west of the city. The twisty road winds through hills and tropical forest to the cable car station. In a few minutes of climb, the view reveals a sea of clouds — a scene both grand and unreal.

At the top, I find the famous Golden Bridge, held aloft by two giant stone hands that look as if they are rising out of the mountain — a must-see in 6 days in Hue Da Nang Hoi An. The view before me is dizzying: valleys disappear into the fog while light changes with the movement of the clouds. Farther along, the flower gardens, the French village and the tiny Linh Chua Linh Tu temple wait in a timeless space between sky and earth. I eat lunch at a restaurant with a view of the mountains shrouded in mist, then make my way down in the early afternoon, still suffused with that magical feeling that comes when nature and clouds meld.

At noon, I go to the Cham Museum, which is at the top for a list of things to see to know the culture of central Vietnam. The largest assembly of Cham sculptures in the world is displayed in a building of colonial architecture: Hindu divinities, stone dancers, elaborately carved bas-reliefs. Each room appears to recite a portion of history, an ancient legend or a breath of the bygone kingdom. While visiting the galleries, filled with light, I let myself be amazed by the beauty and spirituality that emanate from these ancient pieces.

For evening, I walk along the riverside near the Dragon Bridge, an unmissable stroll when wondering what to do in Da Nang. The city lights shimmer on the water and the famous bridge becomes increasingly illuminated. If you are there on a weekend, don’t miss the dragon’s fire and water show amid the sound of applause — the city then reveals itself in all its energy and modernity. A bright and vibrant evening, in complete contrast to the morning’s tranquility.
After the lively days spent in Da Nang, I continue my journey toward Hoi An, a little gem in Central Vietnam. Only about thirty kilometers away, the landscape gradually changes: the sea drifts away, giving way to green rice fields and peaceful villages.

I start my tour in the old quarter with a walk among the old houses, temples and the Japanese Covered Bridge — the emblem of Hoi An, a highlight stop for 6 days in Hue Da Nang Hoi An. Lithe alleys are illuminated by lanterns, laughter from merchants and scent of incense lingers in the air, this combination makes it vibrant yet tranquil. I duck into a traditional home to take in the elaborately carved wood, then succumb to a Vietnamese coffee on a balcony that looks out over the river. Everything about this place says slow down, think quietly.

In the afternoon, I attend a lantern making workshop — a quintessential creative workshop that, at the core of this trip to Central Vietnam, Hoi An’s lantern artisans and poetic soul is perfectly embodied. Under the patient guidance of the artisans, I start piecing together the bamboo sticks, pulling the vibrant silk fabric and crafting my own lantern. The pace is slow and exacting, almost contemplative. A mild sense of pride washes over me – having created with my own hands – a tiny piece of Hoi An’s magic.

Late in the day, I head to the night market — one of the loveliest moments of this trip for finding things to do in Hoi An when the city turns on its lights. The multi-colored lanterns reflect on the river with the smell of roasted food wafting through the air. I wander through the bustling stalls, snack on a crunchy banh mi and pick out a few handmade goodies to take home as souvenirs. I sit on the quay, lantern in hand, watching the flickering lights on the water. The day draws to a close in an almost hypnotic mildness, where the magic of Hoi An seems to hold time still.
Accommodation: The Blue Alcove hotel (day 5)

Day 6, I’m slowly pedaling out of the center of Hoi An on my bike towards the village of Tra Que, just ten minutes away. When I arrive, I slip on a conical hat and among the locals and become a Vietnamese farmer for a moment. Under the soft morning light, I dig the earth, sow some herbs and give the balsams a drink by hand with the traditional bamboo watering cans. Here’s a true and touching experience that introduces me to the simplicity and beauty of a typical day in the life of a Vietnamese farmer.

I ended a half-day in the garden with a trip to a village cooking class – a true delight and one of the most authentic experiences of the 6 days in Hue Da Nang Hoi An. On the advice of the chef, we prepare some local dishes: nem ran, green papaya salad and the incredibly popular cao lau. The scent of fresh herbs permeates the air, the hands move busily and the faces beam with smiles. We then share the meal together, laughing around a large wooden table. It is a moment of simplicity and warmth, where smiles blend with the tastes and flavors of the Vietnamese countryside.
Back in Hoi An, I take one last stroll along bathed-brick laneways before heading back to the hotel to get ready for the road. The luggage gathers small baubles: a silk lantern, a jar of tea, a handful of souvenirs in the colors of Vietnam. Late afternoon, I am on my way straight to Da Nang Airport to Hanoi. Through the airplane window, I observe the central coast, rice paddies and mountain ranges slowly disappear. This 6-day itinerary in Hue Da Nang Hoi An ends here, but its print for a long time will be like a peaceful light in the memory of my Vietnam.
